History of the “Tequila Sunrise” Cocktail
The “Tequila Sunrise” cocktail first appeared in the 1930s at the Arizona Biltmore Hotel in Phoenix, Arizona. It was created by bartender Gene Sulit and quickly gained popularity due to its bright, striking appearance, resembling a sunrise — hence the name “Sunrise.” The modern version of the cocktail, as we know it today, emerged in the 1970s when grenadine was added to create the famous gradient effect from yellow to red.
The cocktail became especially popular after the rock band The Eagles released a song titled “Tequila Sunrise” in 1973. This gave the drink a cult status and solidified its position in the world of cocktails.
