Sambuca with the Fly

Sambuca con la Mosca (“Sambuca with the Fly”) is a traditional way of serving the Italian liqueur with coffee beans. The name refers to the coffee beans symbolizing “flies,” and the drink is often enjoyed as an aperitif or digestif.

Ingredients:

  • 50 ml of Sambuca
  • 3 coffee beans

Preparation:

  1. Pour 50 ml of Sambuca into a small liqueur glass.
  2. Add three coffee beans to the drink. They symbolize health, wealth, and happiness.
  3. Optional (if desired):
    • Light the Sambuca by tilting the glass slightly. Let it burn for 3–5 seconds to enhance the aromas of anise and coffee. Extinguish the flame before drinking.
    • For an intensified flavor, lightly chew the coffee beans before sipping the Sambuca.

Serving:

Serve neat, sometimes accompanied by a small glass of cold water on the side. Sambuca con la Mosca beautifully balances the sweetness of anise with the bitterness of coffee.
