Mint Julep – A Classic of Southern Hospitality

History of the Cocktail

The Mint Julep is one of the oldest American cocktails, with its origins dating back to the 18th century. The word “julep” originally came from the Arabic “julab,” which referred to a sweet, aromatic water used for medicinal purposes. Over time, in the United States, this drink took on its iconic form when bourbon, mint, and ice were added.

The cocktail is especially popular in the Southern states of America, and since 1938, it has been the official drink of the famous Kentucky Derby horse race, where hundreds of thousands of Mint Juleps are served each year. Traditionally, it is presented in silver or pewter cups to keep the drink colder for longer.
