The Vesper cocktail is an original James Bond recipe, first introduced in Ian Fleming’s book Casino Royale. In the novel, Agent 007 orders it exactly, specifying the proportions with precision.
Vesper Martini cocktail recipe
Ingredients:
Gin – 90 ml
Vodka – 30 ml
Lillet Blanc (French aperitif vermouth) – 15 ml
Ice
Lemon zest for decoration
Preparation:
Fill a shaker with ice cubes to allow the ingredients to chill.
Add the gin, vodka and Lillet Blanc to the shaker.
Shake the cocktail for a few seconds (unlike regular martinis, which are usually stirred, Bond prefers the Vesper shaken).
Strain the drink into a chilled martini glass.
Garnish with a strip of lemon zest, gently bending it over the cocktail to release the aromatic oils.
Note: Lillet Blanc used to contain more quinine, which gave the Vesper a slight bitterness, but its recipe has changed. Some modern bartenders add a drop of aperol or bitters to create an original flavor.
The Vesper cocktail perfectly captures the James Bond style – strong, complex and a bit daring.
