Moscow Mule cocktail

History of the Moscow Mule

The Moscow Mule is a popular cocktail that was actually created in the U.S., not in Russia, as the name might suggest. In 1941 in Los Angeles, three entrepreneurs — John Martin (owner of the company promoting Smirnoff vodka), Jack Morgan (owner of the Cock’n Bull bar that produced ginger beer), and Rudy Kunert — met to discuss how to promote their products. Thus, the idea was born to mix vodka, ginger beer, and lime juice. The cocktail was served in a copper mug, which became its signature feature.

The cocktail gained popularity due to its refreshing qualities and became a cult drink. It’s considered a classic, known for its simplicity and ease of preparation.

Moscow Mule Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 60 ml vodka
  • 120 ml ginger beer
  • 15 ml fresh lime juice
  • Ice (crushed or cubes)
  • Lime (for garnish)
  • Mint sprig (optional)

Preparation:

  1. Fill a copper mug with ice.
  2. Add vodka and lime juice.
  3. Top off the mug with ginger beer.
  4. Gently stir the cocktail with a spoon.
  5. Garnish the mug with a lime wedge and, if desired, a sprig of mint for aroma.

This cocktail has a refreshing taste with a light spiciness from the ginger and a tangy kick from the lime, making it perfect for hot days.
