Café Royal Cocktail: A Classic with a Royal Touch

History

Café Royal is more than just coffee with alcohol—it’s a ritual. Known for its simplicity, refined taste, and theatrical presentation, this drink turns an ordinary cup of coffee into a work of art. Popular in Europe, especially in France, the cocktail is perfect as a dinner finale or a warming beverage on a cold evening.

Ingredients

  • Black coffee — 120 ml (preferably freshly brewed and strong)
  • Cognac — 30 ml (can be replaced with Armagnac or brandy)
  • Sugar cube — 1 piece
  • A pinch of cinnamon (optional)
  • Long-handled spoon and lighter or matches (for flambéing)

Preparation

  1. Prepare the coffee. Brew fresh black coffee—preferably using a French press or espresso machine.
  2. Moisten the sugar cube. Place the sugar cube on a metal spoon and moisten it with cognac.
  3. Flambé the sugar. Light the cognac on the spoon. Hold the sugar until it caramelizes (about 15 seconds), then carefully drop it into the hot coffee.
  4. Add the remaining cognac. Pour the rest of the cognac into the cup.
  5. Stir and serve. Optionally, garnish with a pinch of cinnamon.

Tips and Variations

  • For a milder taste, you can use coffee or chocolate-based liqueurs instead of cognac.
  • Replace cinnamon with whipped cream for a dessert-style variation.
  • In some versions, the drink is garnished with grated nutmeg or orange zest.

Conclusion

Café Royal is not just a drink—it’s a ceremony that blends sophistication, warmth, and aroma. It’s perfect for a romantic evening, a cozy chat, or as a spectacular end to a festive dinner.
